TBT Wishes You A Merry Christmas And A Happy New Year!
Time really flies and year end is always the busiest with lots of birthday celebrations and festivities!
With work commitments, Vanessa could only join us after work at around 7+ in the evening (please be reminded it is a Saturday and Christmas eve to boot). Christmas eve is naturally one of the busiest day for those in F&B line and Sam will be knocking off late from work. Valerie had appointment with her gynaecologist (yes she’s expecting her second child) and came by around 5+ in the evening after she dabao-ed some noodles which was her lunch or was it brunch?!!! Anyway, I was taken aback when she arrived teary eyed at my door.
“What’s wrong, hon?” I asked solicitously.
Both she and Ryan were wrangling at the entrance but I could not make head or tail of the mild bickering.
Later, I learnt from Ryan that the heavy rain had made the pathways slippery and Valerie fell. She’s more than 30 weeks pregnant and he was very worried about both mother and child. He chided himself for not holding her which he normally does. At 32 weeks pregnancy, Valerie was trying to make light of the incident and wanted to go clean the car.
“Mom, where do you keep the kitchen towels and detergents?”
“I spilled laksa gravy.”
“Forget about the car! Are you sure you are alright? I’ll send it for steam cleaning. If you really can’t live with that, we’ll sell this car and get a new one…” Ryan pleaded.
Yup, preggers can get emotional and unreasonable at times. I chided her for worrying us with her restlessness, and refusal to slow down her pace to assess her fall.
“Are you in pain? Did you bleed?” No verbal communication the next few minutes.
She was stubborn as an ox! In the end, she was persuaded to let KT clean her car. After a quick late lunch with Ryan, Valerie went about getting our Christmas dinner preparation in order. I became her “Sous-Chef de Cuisine” and TJ’s “Sleep Fairy” for the next few gruelling hours.
Vanessa had managed to grab a cab in the heavy downpour and arrived lugged with heavy photography equipments. Her punch in gave KT and I a chance for smoke break. I was about to go into fits due to nicotine withdrawal, lol…
Back to the chopping board…
“KT, be a darling and open a bottle of Chardonnay?”
I reckoned it was time to get tipsy as I’ve heard that “cooking on the sauce” can vastly improve the recipe. What better time to test this theory than over Yuletide? Relax! I’m not an inebriated cook, I was just trying to get into the Christmas “spirit”.
“KT, can you top up my wine please?” Wahahaha… Hicks!
“How far are you along the road to Bethlehem?” Vanessa texted. Shortly after, Sam rolled in.
Finally, all of us congregated at the table. I was hunched over carving ham and turkey, muttering “eat, eat…”
“Sit down, mom. You know we won’t start till you’re seated!” Valerie coaxed.
I scooped a dollop of mash and got startled by a joyous chorus of “Merry Christmas!!!”
The clock struck 12! So! We had feasted from Christmas Eve to Christmas Day itself. Not bad, not bad at all!
Happy cooking, eating and bonding! 🙂
