It’s A Long One!

My caption on the photo below went like this in facebook, “Uber busy these days but I finally got down for a quick meal with a super sweet friend who took pic of our lunch. There were 3 sliders but my hungry friend took one, hahas… Guess where was I this afternoon?”

Some readers and friends replied, “Long Bar at Raffles Hotel!”

The damning evidence? The spiral staircase in the photo gave it away.

Raffles Hotel is a colonial-style hotel in Singapore. It was established by two Armenian brothers from Persia — Martin and Tigran Sarkies — in 1887. In later years they were joined by younger brothers Aviet and Arshak and kinsman Martyrose Arathoon. With their innovative cuisine and extensive modernisations, the firm built the hotel into Singapore’s best known icon. It was named after Stamford Raffles, the founder of modern Singapore, whose statue had been unveiled in 1887. – Wikipedia

There were 3 sliders but my hungry friend took one, hahas…
Guess where was I this afternoon?

These traditional fans swing to provide air circulation.

The Grandfather Clock is quite a feature at the bar.

The “Grandfather Clock” is quite a stunning feature at the bar.

Groundnuts, also known as Monkey Nuts, is a special feature in Long Bar.
What’s so special about these nuts?
Nothing!

Long Bar Raffles Hotel

Tradition dictates you throw the Monkey Nut shells on the floor after consuming them.
This practice is so “famous” even tripadvisor wrote about it. Is there a rationale on this?
Apparently it helps to polish the floor.
Now, I’ll need to seek verification from the cleaners.

I saw a pigeon on the window and thought it was a statue until it swooped down.
Looking around, I found more pigeons.
The birds roam quite freely among the guests so be forewarned if you have ornithophobia.
I wonder if any guests got pooped on before, hmmm…

My friend had a Gunner while I had 2 glasses of their housepour Chardonnay.

Spring Roll.
I had thought them to be the “fresh”skin type like the Vietnamese Rice Rolls but they were fried in batter.

There’s prawns and banana which complemented each other well.
Eat with sweet Thai chilli sauce.

Long Bar Sliders.
3 mini beef burgers with cheddar and lettuce.
My friend doesn’t like raw tomatoes so we had them on the side, for me 😉
We found the patties to be a bit dry.

Two burgers for me???

Are you serious?
In that case, I’ll take the fries, too! Lol…

I was thinking of the decadent chocolate cake but left it to my to order our dessert.

Long Bar (F&B outlet) in Raffles Hotel is the birthplace of the famous Singapore Sling! Unfortunately, I am not a fan of that particular cocktail and thus did not order any during lunch. My friend had a gunner while I had chardonnay. For those who like gin sling, there are recipes below; shaken not stirred 😉

The Singapore Sling is a South-East Asian cocktail. This long drink was developed sometime before 1915 by Ngiam Tong Boon, a Hainanese bartender working at the Long Bar in Raffles Hotel Singapore. It was initially called the gin sling, a sling was originally an American drink composed of spirit and water, sweetened and flavored.

The Singapore sling has been documented as early as 1930 as a recipe in the Savoy Cocktail Book; Ingredients ¼ lemon juice, ¼ Dry Gin, ½ Cherry Brandy: “Shake well and strain into medium size glass, and fill with soda water. Add 1 lump of ice”.

The official IBA specified ingredients for Singapore Sling Recipe:
3 cl Gin
1.5 cl Heering Cherry Liqueur (cherry brandy)
0.75 cl Cointreau
0.75 cl DOM Bénédictine
1 cl (2 parts) Grenadine
12 cl (16 parts) Pineapple juice
1.5 cl Fresh lime juice
1 dash Angostura bitters

Preparation:
Pour all ingredients into cocktail shaker filled with ice cubes. Shake well. Strain into highball glass. Garnish with pineapple and cocktail cherry.

It's a long bill which I had to crop.

The Chardonnay and Cheesecake are definitely to go for.
Don’t know about my friend’s Gun Gunner…

The Cheesecake is a keeper and is highly recommended if you happened to pop by.

It’s been eons (yes, exaggerating) since I lunch on a social basis and that luxury of an hour in the middle of a weekday may short but to me, it’s a long one!

P.S. Btw, 16th September is our ex-prime minister Mr. Lee Kuan Yew’s birthday. He is 91 years old this year 🙂 According to Wikipedia, Mr. Lee was the first Prime Minister of Singapore, governing for three decades. He is also widely recognised as the founding father of modern Singapore.
