Kok Sen Restaurant 国成餐室

Completely exhausted and parched. I couldn’t decide if it was the hot weather or the msg in my briyani lunch. Two ice cold beer from Tippletown Cafe did not help at all. So this round at Three Buns, I had iced coffee – white, while Z, still dizzy from his fruit beer (which he only consumed half and turned red) had ice lemon tea.

Tippletown Cafe serves crafted and fruit beers.
There’s bar food like bangle & mash, fish & chips as well as lamb masala.
The place opens at 5pm and I saw a promo sign stating that for 3 hours, free flow of beer at S$35.

Tong Ah

Tong Ah 東亞 – easily one of the oldest building in Singapore.
There are many good eateries house here as well as in the extension shophouses and Kok Sen (the blue sign board on right), is one place for rustic Cantonese cze char.

Three Buns

On the left of Tong Ah 東亞 (building in above photo) where the bull dog sign hangs is Three Buns.
They ran out of standard cups and split our drinks into two cups.
The lady server was pretty cool and cheerful.
Place your order at the cash counter.
Z was a gentleman and stayed with me till Desmond called to say he’s already in the cab on his way.
Z left for his “forgotten” dinner appointment afterwards.

Kok Sen has been operating in one of these pre-war shophouses along Keong Saik Road for as long as I can remember and I am not young. It has a ranking of 182 out of 2,552 restaurants in tripadvisor! Keong Saik Road has a bad reputation (a.k.a. red light district in the old days) so respectable ladies do not like to go there. Times have changed and these streets have been cleaned up by the anti-vice. – Sam Han (The Bonding Tool), February 2013.

Upon checking Kok Sen’s ranking for today’s post, Kok Sen has been revised to “Ranked #861 of 7,194 Restaurants in Singapore” in tripadvisor.

Big Prawn Noodles (we had hor fun – broad flat rice noodles) is one of Kok Sen Restaurant’s (国成餐室) signature dish.
We had to share table with others as the place was running full house as usual.

Kale with Roast Pork Belly (Kailan Chao Siew Yoke) is one of my favourite dishes here but since it was the first time Desmond ate here, I had the excuse to order repeat food (I’ve posted these before) like this and the big prawn hor fun above..

The last time I had this dish was easily 15 years ago when Paul brought me here for dinner.
Desmond was very impressed by the fish paste filling.
Of course, he was not spared…
I started telling him how a springy fish paste is achieved, animatedly – by slapping the paste against the wall repeatedly.
Just kidding, lol… But slapping is the truth, probably against a metal bowl.

Y and Z were supposedly to join us for dinner but had last minute/forgotten appointment. If they and busy-for-the-next-two-week Benny had joined us, we would have ordered more dishes. The portions you see are small and that could easily fed 3-4 small eaters. Our bill for 3 dishes came up to S$45.

How’s the food, Desmond? Yumz, the word 🙂

    I’ve not heard of fruit beer before.
    The photos are great – you can make anything look mouth watering. 🙂

      My friend Z said “no drinking during work hours” but I goaded him to join me, haha… I normally don’t like beer. Fruit beers have lower alcohol content, or so the staff informed so Z had that. Thanks for the kind comment on my food photos, it put a big smile on my face 😀 😀 😀
