Touted as the famous stall number 7 at Fengshan Market & Food Centre (FC), Xing Ji Rou Cuo Mian Bar Chor Mee is the first stall to sell authentic Bak Chor Mee (BCM) in this market.

I was at this particular FC a month ago but didn’t eat any BCM. I had porridge instead. The porridge was so good I dabao some home for my girls.

A couple of nights ago (Monday), I was at Kampong Chai Chee Community Centre for “Wide Field Astrophotography” workshop. After the class, Paul, Jayden and I went for supper. I wanted to eat the pork porridge again.

The car park was full and Paul had to drive out in search of a parking lot. Jayden and I alighted first to find seats in the crowded FC. We found a table near Xing Ji Rou Cuo Mian. Jayden had eaten their BCM recently and didn’t mind eating it again. It must be good and so I’ve heard.

Don’t be fooled… The queue was short but the waiting time was long! It was a good half hour after Paul found us before we could eat and for that we were considered lucky. Many diners have had the experience of waiting up to an hour and sometimes longer for their scrumptious bowl.

Ordering is simple as there wasn’t a choice of dry or soup, only regular or large size. Clearly I was a newbie at the stall when I innocently asked for a dry version. The sign board did indicate that they only sell soup style but I had overlooked that. I quickly amended my orders for 3 large bowls at S$3 each. I gave the order-taker our table number and paid up.

You only have a choice on the serving size – S$2.50 or S$3.

A layer of minced pork was buried under the noodles.

The 幼面 (youmian – thin noodles) had QQ texture which I am a fan of (but none of the eggy fragrance found in wanton noodle’s type of 幼面 and it is not supposed to). There was some very finely minced pork which was prepared by adding scalding stock to them and allowed to sit aside till almost done. When the cook decides it was time, he would blanch the noodles, put them on top of the mince and top up with soup and some meatballs.

The minced pork virtually melted in the mouth like cotton. I preferred coarser texture for mastication. The meatballs, possibly factory made was ordinarily firm.

The only thing that was outstanding is the savoury clear, albeit a little oily, soup base.

Sure, I will eat there again if I am in the neighbourhood but is it really worth the travel from Bukit Timah to Bedok and wait for half an hour or more? Not in my book.

Whatever it is, Xing Ji has got numerous thumbs-up from our local media coverage (television programmes, newspapers and food magazines) as well as the accolades from many food and lifestyle bloggers. Xing Ji’s signboard displayed their approvals.

For an extra 50c, why would anyone order regular size? 🙂
    Astrophotography? Wow.

Singaporeans love to eat. A small order would allow them to have other foods, like oyster omelet, carrot cake or bbq chicken wings, hahaha…

I was helping out at the workshop. My friend PS was conducting the class. Needs a lot of patience for this genre. I am thinking of going to Bromo for star trails but the cold and new lens costs are deterring me. Still have a couple of months to ponder if I should go. 😉
