I couldn’t believe my eyes when the bill was presented. Rick’s set lunch was S$10! Not a nett price but still! In one of the world’s most expensive city, can one really enjoy a more than decent but actually wholesome meal which includes an appetiser/soup, main course, coffee and dessert, even though it’s a small piece of Oreo cheesecake? Apparently so!

When we arrived, the place was still quite empty but the hungry white-collar crowd quickly trickled in by the time we placed our orders. Lunch was brisk business and I found out why. The food was fresh, obviously because of their high turnover, and the reasonable pricing made it attractive to both the locals and tourists alike.

I saw a touristing family on the right of our table having a pita sandwich, Shawarma, and asked what was offered. I think the waitress mentioned beef or lamb but I wasn’t paying attention… Chicken for me, I’ve made up my mind. Not too keen on red meat that day.

The pita was warm, toasty on the outside with juicy slivers of chicken shreds generously stuffed into the pockets. I enjoyed it with the mayo. The last time I had shawarma was in 2009 in Tehran and I didn’t realise how much I missed it until then. This tasted better than I remembered. The Hummus, however, was a little dense. I would preferred it to be lighter in texture but it was definitely unadulterated chickpea paste. The Salad was refreshingly hinting of sour from the balsamic vinegar.

Baba Ghanoush (means pampered papa in Arabic term) was ordered because I didn’t think a pita would be satiable but I was wrong. The sandwich was a satisfying meal even for a man but I was glad to have this lovely aubergine mash. It was light as air and didn’t make me feel overstuffed. A delicious side which I ate all by myself!

I didn’t expect the S$10 Set Lunch to be this tasty. I had tried some of Rick’s meal. The soup was well seasoned and light in taste. The chicken, thigh meat, was tender and moist. I did not go for the vegetables but judging from the look, they should taste alright. Rick cleaned up his plate and ordered a second beer. I had his coffee and dessert 🙂

    Everything looks incredible! My husband has spoken wonders about Baba Ghanoush but I have yet to try it for myself. I’m a sucker for pita bread so hearing you describe it so wonderfully makes me incredibly hungry.
