Portuguese Cuisine @ Guincho a Galera 葡国餐廳 (Macau)

It is safe to say that most people who come to Macau loves to gamble, but what does one do if one does not embrace the glitzy neon and bright baize, like me? Well, in a country of high rollers, there’s always the designer shopping and then there’s the fine dining. I opted for the Christofle flatware, obviously.

Guincho a Galera is the first international branch of Michelin-starred restaurant, Fortaleza do Guincho in Portugal, taking Portuguese fine-dining to a whole new level with skillful and innovative creations under the rein of Head Chef Martinho Moniz.

Quoting a dear Hong Konger friend who is known for her gourmet taste and knowledge in diverse cultural background of food origins, “This is authentic Portuguese cuisine, not Macanese!” If this restaurant manages to escape her critical lashing tongue and gets her thumbs up, I’ll leave it to you to decide if this decadent meal of the year 2013 (for me) is impressive enough on a date 😉

Note: Besides my main course of Baked Salt-crusted Sea Bass, I managed to have generous samplings of most food (shown in pictures here) within the radius of: 2 persons each on my left and right, plus 5 more opposite of me. I’m sure I’d missed the Chicken Casserole and Portuguese Chicken dishes besides the Caldo Verde Soup. I do not know what qualifies as an authentic Portuguese meal but the visually appealing provision (except for the frothy spittle-looking stuff on the sea urchin) hit my umami notes over and over again.

I call this loaf "Monkey Bread".<br />The dinner roll was warm, indicating fresh from the oven, and had nice soft tender yet chewy texture.

Appetiser. I bit into the ball but couldn't figure out what it was and didn't quite like it. I nibbled on on the cucumber instead.

Black truffle and goose liver pie served with glazed apple came highly recommended by my girlfriend. It had very nice buttery and flaky pastry shell. I did not eat the foie gras inside, keeping space in my tummy for the pan seared ones.

Seafood with sea urchin mousse and avocado.<br />I was turned off by the slobber but after someone had eaten the top half, I managed to scoop into the muted shell and got some delicate mollusc meat.<br />The melba toast with vegetables was the only token greens I had that night.<br />The vegetables on my Sea Bass main course was gladly distributed to my other "healthy" friends.

Taking food pictures when eating with my Hong Kong friends is like shooting in an event.<br />Everything goes live and if I'd miss a dish in the chaotic situation... "Oh, that's just too bad".<br />Originally, there were 14 of us but a couple from Hong Kong heard it from the grapevine that we were celebrating at Guincho's and helicoptered in to join us on the eve of New Year's Eve.
