Rokeby – Australian Inspired Cafe & Night Bistro Bar

Rokeby, serving artisan coffee and Australian fare (nestled in Jalan Riang a rather off track venue), would never have come to my attention had I not stumbled upon it online. The reviews were mixed but I miss Australia… especially Melbourne, where the coffee culture (mostly Italian, btw) is great! – Sam Han (June 7, 2013).

Rokeby was running at full steam the last time I came with Chi Sao and Benjamin (click to see post here) and thus we did not get to taste anything.

Lately, The Silver Chef has been yearning for Rokeby’s coffee. He usually drinks iced tea without sugar. Since he had mentioned it several times and we were nearby (in Ang Mo Kio area), we came here for coffee after a scrumptious meal of Zhen Ming Prawn Noodles.

Although we had eaten and was here for coffee and desserts, I couldn’t help but order a main meal of Rokeby’s Freo Fish ‘n’ Chips on top of the Molten Lava Cake as I knew it could be weeks before I come by this way again. It’s the festive season and most of my buddies would be out of town.

I hardly eat fish and chips in Melbourne as I could only get good ones in St. Kilda’s which is quite a distant from where we were living in Franklin/Swanston. It is even more difficult to get good Chippy in Singapore.

Freo Fish ‘n’ Chips are available at these times:
Tuesday to Saturday 12pm – 9.30pm
Sunday 3.30pm – 9.30pm

Denyse, one of the owners, told us that Pure Blonde (beer) was used in their batter. The carbon dioxide in the Pure Blonde lends a lighter texture to the batter as well as giving the deep-fried fish a golden-brown colour. I squeezed the lemon over the fish which retained its crunch quite well and sliced it into 3 portions. I doused my share with the malt vinegar provided and enjoyed it thoroughly (without adding salt or ketchup). The Pacific Dory was amazingly light, smooth and juicy. I loved it!

I dipped the crisp thick British Chips (which are traditionally fatter than the American-style French fries) into the tartar but found the sauce too sweet for my liking.

Molten Lava Cake (S$6) is served throughout the day. Add S$3 for a scoop of ice cream. No socks came off 😉

Kelvin, the decision maker of Rokeby, shared with us that they had just switched to other types of coffee beans. Yummicraft gave him the feedback that he found the Long Black a little acidic in aftertaste. The Silver Chef had no complaints. There’s not much to say about my iced tea. But if you are in search of a good Chipper, why not give this place a try?

Ooh Australia is somewhere I’ve always wanted to visit! Looks like good food and a good time-especially since it’s summertime there!

It’s funny – over the last 2 months, on and off, I have been craving fish and chips. But I must wait – I live in the Middle of US and I don’t trust the fish. Haha
