Forture Seafood Steamboat 得运海鲜火锅

The name Forture was supposedly Fortune but it was mis-spelt during printing. Business was booming and they kept it since.

Forture Seafood Steamboat Restaurant is one of the longest operating cze char in Bukit Timah area. It used to be very popular with tables extending all the way to the tented carpark.

Friday night and it seemed quiet. I asked the man what happened to the “al fresco” seatings and he just gave me a shrug. We got seated outside the kopitiam set-up (there’s an airconditioned shop space belonging to them but one of my friend was eating from the Muslim stall) and placed our orders for the dishes that I remembered as their signatures. My families (extended) used to patronise them often before we went overseas. And by often, I mean at least twice a week for years.

Just about to tug in.

The herbal chicken came first. This is one dish I used to enjoy a lot. That night I had only one tablespoon of the soup and stopped at that. I was also struggling to finish the drumstick. I doused my rice with the spicy sourish gravy from the Assam Curry Fish Head, which was a must-order dish. This night, my friend termed it as normal and that she’s had better ones. And to rub salt in the wound, the sambal vegetables came soused in oil.

What happened? A change of cook?

To be fair, my children went there with their friends the following night. They liked Forture’s Chilli Crabs. That said, there are lots of cze char places with fairly good chilli crabs along with very decent regular dishes so I sincerely hope Forture would make some serious revision and improvement on their staple dishes as this place has a lot of memories for my family as well as being one of the scarce “good” places to eat in my neighbourhood.

Charged for appetizer we declined.
I'm sure they would have refunded but that's not the point.

I’m sure they would have refunded but that’s not the point.

Also, we were charged for the acar, a cucumber pickle dish (in receipt charged as “appertizer”), that we distinctly told them we did not want. Yes, it was only a dollar but we didn’t want it. I didn’t check the bill then as it was given to my friend.

The wheel of fortune has changed. And if the word forture means to venture forth to a distant destination, Forture’s food is now very far from the high standards they used to dish out. While the msg-laden food did not make me sick, I lost my appetite and had indigestion for the next 36 hours. Perhaps, I had too much curry, perhaps there was too much oil in the vegetables. I couldn’t put a finger to it. All I can comment is that there is no incentive to make a purposeful trip there anymore. I hope someone corrects me and rave about their dishes… that I have ordered the wrong ones. Nagging time: I live near there… My family used to go there once during the weekdays and once during the weekends. I want to go back again – please tiltilate my tastebuds!

The place used to be cramp with family diners especially on Friday and Saturday nights.
This spot where I was standing taking this shot would be filled with tables of various sizes to accomodate the families.

It’s always sad when a favorite restaurant changes and no longer is the magical place that it once was. Hopefully Forture will get itself back on the right track.

  2. actually i’ve always eat herbal chicken with kampung chicken, never with the ranged ones……
sometimes when we felt the flavour is different, maybe we just eat several kinda like the dish or something better……
