Na Na Thai Food

I don’t know if you’ve gone sick with Thai food that I have been posting recently but a friend of mine has been craving Thai. So whether I like it or not, Thai cuisine it is for my dear friend, Ranjita.

We did not have any idea which stall to patronise but the minute I stepped into the mall, the shop on my left dictated I take a second look.

The fresh looking fish and the pile of coarse salt reminded me of the grilled fish I had at Pratunam. I knew I had to try this.

Ranjita, far right, had Thai cravings. So here we are doing Thai cuisine at an "authentic" eatery in Beach Road.

This place seemed very popular with high turnover of diners. Business is definitely brisk! Also, the food display attracted me so much, I ordered all 4 plus a couple more.

Thai Mango Salad. Spicy? May said "yes!" but I think not. Appetizing? both of us agreed, "Yes!"

I had better hold my horses and order half a bird instead of whole. We're definitely adding more dishes to the 4 items I have just ordered without consulting the others.

Thais like to leave some scales on the fish. Do they eat them? Is it some kind of delicacy?

I would very much preferred the fish slightly more charred than this. The one I had in Thailand was so good I couldn't help using that standard as a yardstick for this dish eversince.

I much prefer Seafood Tom Yum to just Tom Yum Goong. There's squid, mushrooms, prawns, crab sticks, fish balls, fish fillet in this pot.

I haven’t been keeping in touch with some friends. Ranjita’s aunt whom she had been taking care of for many years, recently passed on. I wasn’t aware until this week when May and Ross informed me. Ranjita took it in her stride quite calmly. We met up and Ranjita said she had Thai cravings and wanted to go to Orchard Towers. I suggested we go to Golden Mile Complex (little Thailand in Singapore) and they were game for it. While this may not be the best of Thai cuisine, we had a good time. The place is run by Thais so there’s no dispute about its authencity. Portions are generous and ingredients are fresh due to their high turnover of diners. Msg is not out of the question but I should say it is minimal. Dinner is not just about taste. Sometimes, the company we have makes up for a great meal.

Did you find out about the fish scales being left on, Sam?

Photos, as always, spectacular. BTW: Fuji might be bought by December. Very excited.

The charring on the fish you had in Thailand, did it make the exterior crunchier? Was that what you were looking for, more texture?

    Halloween is on it’s way….BOO!

    • Sam Han says:

Hi Janet, very excited for you on the acquisition of Fuji. I know you will enjoy it!

Didn’t find out about the scales yet, haven’t spoken to/met with any Thai friend. Yes, I would prefer the charring for more crisp texture. The skin would be more palatable.

Went to this place today. The tomyam is well done; well balance, not too sour and mildly spicy. It is unlike those in Bali Thai or Thai Express which is basically vinegar with plenty of chili. I have papaya salad (mango no stock !!). But it was good. It is better than Nakhon Kitchen that I often go whenever there is craving for Thai food. The only thing I want to complain is the carpark in Golden Mile, the exit is so narrow & with a 90 degree turn. My car scratched the pillar on the way out. So this is a very costly lunch for me 😦

    • Sam Han says:

I’m glad you enjoyed your lunch but sorry to hear that your car got scratched. Hope it’s not too expensive to get it fixed. We went there in a small car so…
