Victor’s Kitchen – Golden Egg Yolk Lava Bun 黄金流沙包

Oh well, I might as well do one more post on dim sum but this time only one item and a beverage. The west has chocolate lava cake and in the east, we have custard lava buns. The last time I had 流沙包 (liu sha bao) was at Yum Cha (Chinatown) Restaurant and I complained that it was just a plain custard bun without running filling as the name promised. Just two days back, Levin told me that he knew a place that has the best – creamy flowy savoury sweet custard! The best? Not until I see it for myself.

I was very excited when I saw this sign on the shop's mirror. It is a promise to be good!

The shop claimed it to be 100% HK taste. Tea was rich in milk and came in ice bath.

It took a few minutes for the buns to come after we've placed our order. Needed some time for steaming to make sure it was piping hot so that the custard would liquefy inside.

Came in a set of 3 for S$4.

What a joy when I peeled off the paper on the underside of the bun and saw this!

Levin warned Zexsen that the filling was hot and to be careful not to get scalded by the flowing "lava".

Very generous amount of filling. It's liquid gold to me :D

We came all the way from Old Airport Road to Bencoolen Street just for the buns. We did not eat other dim sum so the rating is for the buns only. If Victor’s Liu Sha Bao stays at this consistency, then my recommendation is “die die must try” lah!

Rating for “Golden Egg Yolk Lava Bun 黄金流沙包” only: 9.5/10.

Happy eating 😀

Only 9.5/10. What a tough judge!

  2. I had 流沙包 at Yum Cha last week…it was rubbish! I thought the buns at 鴻星海鮮酒家 in Hong Kong were the best I’ve tried but these look even more drop dead delicious!

Geri, go to Victor’s for this pau. I read from ironlady blog that he gave up the pau after 2 visits and his pictures showed a very “dry” version. I think Victor had a breakthrough with this. I did not try other stuff from his place but the next shops (aong the same stretch) has got good wanton mee (hopefully still good, my friend said the standard dropped) and chicken pie (from the muffin shop). Do try them when you go there.

    That looks interesting. Pretty color.

It’s custard and salted egg yolk but I suspect (just a wild guess) since I do not know the recipe that some food colouring is used too (probably already in the custard powder). 🙂

    That looks DELICIOUS!
