Tug Of War

I was the last to wake up. P had gone out for her massage (the lady promised her to open for business at 11am, their normal operating hours starts at 12nn) but she was played out. P went to the streets to collect her 50 pieces of tapioca pancakes which we loved and got stood up too. Hmmm… Inconsistency of Thai hospitality or did they not understand P?

We didn’t want to go back to Singapore, not just yet. We wanted to stay over the weekend and visit Chatuchak but the weather forecast predicted “light rain, cloudy skies, cloudy skies, rain and possible thunder”, these all in a day, everyday. Now don’t get me wrong, I love the rain! I wish it would rain daily, just not where I’m standing and wherever I move, the lack of rain will follow. Wouldn’t that be cool? Foolish thinking! The rainy season lasts from May to November and is dominated by the southwest monsoon, during which time rainfall in most of Thailand is at its heaviest.

At this moment, I couldn’t help but remember that Steve Jobs once read “stay hungry, stay foolish” on the back cover of The Whole Earth Catalog, and those four words came to guide his life. Stay hungry, stay foolish… That’s easy for me, but Steve Jobs and I were on different wavelengths. Yeah, some food for thought eh?

The hotel transfer came after a small hiccup bringing the rain with it. It was pouring heavily outside so I did not take any pictures along the way. I think it poured a little inside me, too.

Upon arrival at the departure hall and after checking in, I saw a giant, nope, 2 giant statues to my left. Intrigued, I went towards them. And then I saw… There are 12 of them! All lined up and spread out in a neat row, facing the main entrances on the 2nd story of the concourse buildings.  The statues of these giant characters are based on Ramayana mythology which symbolize the kingdom’s guardians. They are not only meant to manifest the airport’s grandeur but also to attract the visitors’ attention. These giant statues are replications from those at the Emerald Buddha Temple. Suvarnabhumi Airport’s display of these giants seek to introduce oriental literature to its visitors, and at the same time serves as an invitation for tourists to visit the Emerald Buddha Temple, where the actual giants stand to protect the devotees from all devils and ghosts.

The sculpture of these statues,  Tosakanth or Ravana Giant, Sahassadeja Giant, Askan-mara Giant, Cakravarti Giant, Inthrachit Giant, Mangkornkan Giant, Maiyarap Giant, Suriyaphop Giant, Tosagiriwan Giant, Tosagirithorn Giant, Wirun Jambang Giant and Wirunhok Giant, is a testament of Thailand’s intriguing art and culture (albeit heavy influences in Hinduism mythologies).

The cooperation of 88 devas (demigods) and 91 asuras (demons) cause Vasuki to rotate the tower (Mt. Meru) and churn the sea into milky foam, like a gigantic cosmic blender. This releases a seminal fluid that creates a divine ambrosia, the essence of immortality. Interestingly enough, the 91 asuras mark the 91 days between the winter solstice and spring equinox in March, while the 88 devas represent the 88 days to the summer solstice after the equinox period, according to Angkorologist Eleanor Mannikka. Click here to read more.

All the turning and churning made me hungry. After all, we did not have breakfast. P wanted to shop so J and I went to Mango Tree for our last veritable Thai food.

I found this hilarious coming from the airport's online guide review of the restaurant.<br />"Best-selling dishes include pad thai noodle, fried prawn with tamarind sauce and noodle soup with roast duck. The soup was light in colour but it was massively flavorful.<br />Robust beef stock, tender slivers of beef and brisket, bouncy beef balls (hahaha... sounds kinda cheeky) and slippery smooth very thin rice noodles. A wedge of lime may add tang and cut the grease which they did not provide. Chilli flakes and cut chillies really kicked the dish up a notch. Yummy!

The yellow plastic bags next to me were the food souvenirs I bought the day we went to Mahboonkrong I wanted to hand-carry so the crackers would not crumble but it did. Realised that when I arrived in Singapore. What a bummer! 😦

P went for more shopping, bought some baby squid crispies and other stuff. It was time to board.

My trip to effervescent Bangkok has ended. It was back to reality. And you know what? After a round of duty-free shopping at Changi International Airport, I went for some comfort food and wine by the sea in the East Coast before heading home.
