Teochew Orh (Yam) Nee (Paste) 潮式芋泥

Teochew Orh (Yam) Nee (Paste) 潮式芋泥

Boutique dessert houses are sprouting in Singapore and has been so in the last few years. Old desserts are revamped. I did not even knew Bubur Hitam came with Ice Cream until I had it in Ah Chew’s Desserts place. Then I was longing for Bubur or some called it Pulot Hitam but today I’m craving for Orh Nee 😀

Sweet Taro/Yam Paste Dessert or as we call it Teochew Orh Nee 潮式芋泥 is one of my favourite Teochew hot dessert! Too bad no lard in this bowl but the taste was quite heavenly. Thick, rich and undulated with chunks of sweet pumpkin and not in the can type of ginko nuts! This could jolly well be the Asian version of fudgy cheesecake that couldn’t hold its shape but I don’t care.

At first I couldn’t make out if that’s sweet potato or pumpkin because when I ate this as a child, it’s only plain yam paste cooked in lard.

There’s no sheen of oil so it’s a very healthy version of this dessert.

I’m still in search of a place that uses lard. Hard luck!

MHY however does a better job than what most Teochew restaurants can cough up with and at a better price too.

Finally, my first taste of good Orh Nee after so many years!

Perhaps it’s the lack of oil, this Orh Nee seemed to be very thick. I felt it needed some lubricant to make it easier to go down the throat. Maybe I was slightly dehydrated. It was a very hot day after all. But the rich texture was not too easy to swallow.

I had to buy a bottle of mineral water after this.
I was feeling parched. It could be the food I had earlier that had msg but there’s no way to know with so many factors interferring – the hot weather, me not taking enough water and the hawker food I had (most of them use msg).

KC's choice of dessert on this hot day was the Banana Chocolate Shaved/Snow Ice.

You can see how quickly the dessert was staring to melt.

In just a couple of minutes this happened. Now you understand why the Orh Nee though value for money to be rich and gooey was problematic for me especially when I had my dental appointments not too long ago. My throat was still tender.

Can you guess what's this?

These steamed cakes were delightful. They are good for late afternoon tea. Mei Heong Yuen seems to do a good job doing away with oily food. Of course oil were used but I think to the minimum. The toasted sesame seeds added nutty fragrance to the tasty cakes.

I couldn't resist ordering this when I saw the menu. I thot they looked quite appetising for jelly rolls, little did I realised that it was in fact...

mmm–The desserts look delicious. I also had never heard of boutique dessert houses. I hope this trend spreads to the US soon..

  6. love the traditional ‘es kacang’ and ‘es cendol’. Hard to get anywhere else. I did buy an ice shaver once but couldn’t really replicate what these guys do.

Same kind of ice shaver or the modern appliance? Ice need to be dry. Moist or wet ice doesn’t cut nicely if using modern appliance. I was told my mom in law used to sell ice kachang during the war world 2 to feed the family.
