Steamed fish head in single portion size. The taucheo (fermented salted soy beans) lends a wonderful aroma and taste to the dish. I seldom, if ever, find this served in “upper” class restaurants.

So why is dim sum Chinese tapas? As you can see, they come in small servings and just like the Spanish tapas, one can eat as many variety as one can and tiltilate one’s tastebuds as long as possible until it becomes unbearable for one’s tummy 😀

I am quite picky when it comes to dim sum. When I have set my mind to try all (now I can’t try all – the price of getting older) the little wonderful nuggets and the restaurant doesn’t live up to my expectation, I get pretty upset. Afterall, I do not eat 3 meals a day so I expect a decent, unpretentious stimulation of my tongue when I do eat!

This dingy looking place in the dodgy bustling red light district of Singapore is a real gem when it comes to satisfying your dim sum cravings anytime of the week. The place has outdoor and indoor (air-conditioned) dining areas yet they are always full. Luckily they are opened 24 hours a day and to be sure I get a place, I usually visit them in the wee hours of the night.

The set-up is old school Hong Kong style dim dum serving more than 70 yumilicious items ranging from deep-fried, pan-fried, steamed, baked, claypot congee to even crab bee hoon if you can stomach that in the middle of the night. Since there are so many items on their menu, one visit is not enough. I shall go back again to try their roast duck congee served in claypot, lotus leaf rice, chicken curry chee cheong fun, steamed pork ribs, steamed chicken feet (dig that?) and whatever I can gorge on the next and next few more visits. Can I really eat that much? Perhaps a week’s diet can take care of that.

I would definitely recommend anyone who wants to get their dim sum fixes here, any time of the day, for quality affordable… you got it, Chinese tapas!

This meal (6+1 items) costs around S$25 for two which you probably have to double or triple the price in the shopping mall outlets. For example, Gold Leaf Melbourne where Ray, Vanessa and I went to just before I came back to Singapore, in my Yum Cha Is Chinese Brunch post, the 9 items cost slightly under AU$100.

    Am drooling! I love dim sum. When I used to live in South East Asia, I would go with my mum and her (mainly Chinese) friends for dim sum breakfast, that would evolve into a brunch and evolve into lunch. And then you were so stuffed that was it for the rest of the day. I miss it so much, because you can get a couple of dim sums here but its not the same. Your photos look amazing I am just imagining the tastes… Haha thats a ovely detail of yours to black out the licence plate of the car 🙂

      This place is real value for money. I was in Geylang area this evening and passed by the shop, true enough all the seats were taken. This shop has been operating for a long time now and I am glad they maintained their standard. 😀

    Looks delicious. And tick sheets means you get what you want as opposed to the trolley carts where your favourite might be gone by the time the cart reaches you.

    i totally love dim sum, at first i misread your sentence as 61 items instead of 6+1 so I thought it was super cheap. In vancouver, we’re very lucky to have a good range of dim sum from cheapo oily ones to high end world class (not sure if it’s world class, but one of the popular joints Sun Sui Wah likes to claim they are world class, though their food is pretty good) but within a reasonable range. Usually about $2 -$5 CAD per item.

    I love dim sum so much that i thought of creating my own dim sum menu for my wedding banquet rather than the traditional chinese 10 course meal (which we ended up having a western wedding instead). my purpose is because i want to share what we love to eat with the guests but of course, with the older chinese guests, they will think we are cheap if shark’s fin and abalone are not served (one reason we went western is because we are for protecting the sharks so no shark’s fin either way).

    I miss the old school carts and bamboo “loongs”, a lot of places here now are just ordering from a checklist menu.

      Hahaha, you thought the pile of empty baskets (2nd pic) on the table were mine? 61 items for two, lol… I would love to eat that much. I hope to visit there soon for their other dishes. I’m sure Vancouver does Cantonese cuisine well as a lot of Hong Kong chefs went over during (and before in prep of) 1997. I also heard that Canada’s Chinese wax and liver sausages are the best in the world, surpassing HK 😀
