Lo Hei – 七彩魚生撈起! @ Kok Sen Restaurant 国成餐室

Lo Hei - 七彩魚生撈起!Lo Hei 撈起 is a term for eating Yusheng.

As mentioned in my Spring Festival post, one of the must eat dish during CNY is Yu Sheng (literally raw fish) – Lo Hei 撈起 is a term for eating Yusheng 鱼生.

Traditionally, the sale of this dish commences on the 7th day (人日) of CNY but people are eating it way before Spring arrives. My accountant had his on Reunion night before he left for Melbourne two days later. I had originally planned to partake in Lo Hei next Wednesday with Yap, who had just returned from Ipoh, Malaysia, but Li reminded me during lunch at Thanying, Yusheng will not be available after Chap Goh Mei (this Sunday marks the end of CNY celebrations). Most of my friends already had their luck enhanced and some even had seconds on this dish with family and colleagues. I am not going to take the chance of missing out on Lo Hei this year!

Kok Sen2©BondingTool A few WhatsApp messages and an emergency phone call later, my appointment with Yap was duly changed to tonight. Venue – Kok Sen Restaurant.

IMG_8655 Yap had his lo hei in Malaysia and this is his first in Singapore. This is my first anywhere in the world this year and Yes! I have been blessed, lol…

Yusheng Kok Sen2©BondingToolThis auspicious plate of rainbow coloured yusheng 七彩魚生 looked good and tasted even better. The raw Mackerel fish in this yusheng is the most old school and traditional one can get in Singapore. Nowadays, you have a wide choice of salmon fillet, abalone and lobster sashimi.

Louhei Kok Sen1©BondingToolThese two tables of colleagues got up to ready themselves for the big toss when the auspicious dish were presented on their tables. Well wishes were exchanged and then with a shout of 發呀! (prosper!), everyone proceeded to toss the shredded ingredients into the air with chopsticks. The higher one lifts the chopsticks, the higher the luck!

Louhei Kok Sen4©BondingToolSince it is believed that the height of the toss reflects the height of the diner’s growth in fortunes, these diners did toss enthusiastically to “get” as much fortune as they could. Their tables were a bit messy after the toss but nobody minded.

I hereby wish everyone 撈起!撈起!發呀! (to do well in your chosen field and abundance in prosperity!)
