Try Me If You’ve Got Balls! 黑丸嫩仙草

BlackBalls Signature dessert with milk.

BlackBall Signature Icy – S$4.90.

Yeap, you saw it right but you didn’t hear it from me! In fact, “Try Me If You’ve Got Balls!” is the tagline of BlackBall International desserts originating from Taiwan and founded by Mr. Tang.

It’s May Day or Labour Day, whatever you call it, it is a public holiday in Singapore and I’m out for good food and good company. The day started at 11.30am, brunching with Benjamin, Chi Sao, Kean and Su Ching. We were supposed to have some Szechuan cuisine but Ben is allergic to chillies and hot spices… can you believe that? So nada, Szechuan is out. We were back in Chinatown this late morning, the same area where we had eaten recently at Feng Bo Zhuang so western food is out too. Hmmm… Yum Cha, anyone? Everyone nodded enthusiastically. Yum Cha it is but with one condition from me – we order something my blog readers have not seen me post with an exception of some all time favourites. Fair enough but this Yum Cha post will be for another day. Stay tuned all ye dim sum lovers :)

Today, I wanna blog about balls! The mystical and irresistable balls that are chewy… springy… well, the Tawainese described them as QQ (springy with firm bounce). Mr. Tang envisioned that since the magical grass jelly known as Xiancao (仙草) is black in colour and the yam or taro balls are chewy, he named his company BlackBall (黑丸) International.

I have been telling Keef about this dessert but we never seem to come across it in Singapore. The first time I had them was in Malaysia. The second time was Sydney in Australia but I just couldn’t locate them in Singapore and I haven’t a clue on the dessert’s name then so I can’t google it. Now that I found it (with Aloysius), I’ve got balls! Let’s take a look what the rave is all about, shall we?

After some discussion, Aloysius and I decided we should try the BlackBall Signature Icy.

One for you and one for me.

One for you and one for me.

BlackBall Singapore

BlackBall Signature Icy contents from mid left: Grass Jelly (very smooth herbal jelly), Red Beans (tender and sweet), Black Chewy Pearls, Golden Sweet Potatoes, YamQ (not chewy), the Orange Sweet Potatoes and Yam Balls (very chewy, I think the flour coating the tubers are either tapioca or glutinuos rice flour but I can’t be sure).

Add milk if you like... Omit if you don't.

Add milk if you like… omit if you don’t.

I do... I do... I do... like milk, that is.

I do… I do… I do… like milk, that is.

A review here may be biased as I have been wanting this dessert for the longest time so I shall not say much. Just sharing with you something new if you have not tried this before and to those who have and liked it, it’s time to go get them again! Be it hot, cold, warm or icy, match them with your favourite single or a combination of these ingredients: YamQ, Golden Sweet Potato, Grass Jelly, Honey Yam, Pearls, Lotus, Red Beans, Yam Balls, Ice Jelly, Black Sugar Ice Jelly, Nata D Coco, Kidney Beans, Green Beans and/or Fresh Milk. Since today was quite hot and humid, we had icy version. I’m pretty sure this will sabotage my diet plans but Aloysius’ got it figured out. As the saying goes, “When ya get ‘em by the balls, their hearts and minds will follow!” Well, BlackBall got me ;-)

BlackBall Signature - something's gotta give and it's Aloysius bought me this pair of walkers to walk off the extra calories!

BlackBall Signature Icy – Haiz… something’s gotta give and Aloysius gave me this pair of runners after dessert to walk off the extra calories! His action was not absurd – I was given a scratch card, if I accumulate 10 (meaning eat 10 bowls) I would be given another or something. Good thinking, Aloysius. I will walk 500 miles for with you. Thank you!

BlackBall has interesting beverages categorised under Traditional Tea, Winter Melon Tea Series, Fresh Milk Series, Specialty Drinks Series and BlackBall Crushed Ice Series. If you are not sure what to order, I highly recommend the Signature from BlackBall Special Series, so you get to taste a little of everything.

Happy exploring :)

  1. i usually try to avoid be-friending persons who don’t eat chili. they have a different attitude to life. (ok, joking, well, maybe only 1/2 joking.)

    • Sam Han says:

hmmm… interesting info. i must do a blind study on my chilli and non-chilli friends ;-)

      • btw i am really really impressed by all your sites: flickr, tumblr, blogspot, pinterest… and they are all both great looking and v professional. absolutely amazing.

you have pushed me to at least add fb. (i already had twitter). otherwise when i come here i have no ‘face’ at all.

      • Sam Han says:

let me know when you’re on fb, i will “like’ all your posts, hahaha…

      • yes, I’m there. took 3 miserable days out of my life. I am facebook.com/AlienHeartbeat But I am a “page” not a “person”, so I can’t like posts only other pages. I think your facebook.com/bondingtool is also a ‘page’ not a ‘person’. My ‘page’ has liked your ‘page’ – odd way to behave, eh?

        On twitter i am alien-heartbeat.

btw, I have to admit, I used your page and one other (facebook.com/Je.Suis.un.Lapin) as my ‘shining models’.

  2. Melisa R says:

That title! You apparently did have the balls. That dessert is something I would love to try, and after reading your review, I’m so sad that I am not in Singapore.

    • Sam Han says:

Lol… Melisa. They do have some franchisees overseas but I’m not sure if they are in your area. Don’t be sad, I promise you have saved yourself tonnes of calories :D

  3. Sofia says:

I definitely have balls. I want to try: Blackball signature icy, almond soup, honey yam, and red bean crushed ice with milk. I shouldnt have all that in the same day, right? These remind me of Indonesian desserts too :)

  4. Laura Lynn says:

Cool, I tried these in San Francisco, well, a version of them. Pretty tasty but yours looks better.

  5. lignumdraco says:

I’ve never seen this before. You had this in Sydney? Do you remember where?

    • Sam Han says:

Hi Draco, in Sydney it’s a different company but same food. The one I had is:

      13 Goulburn Street
(corner of Dixon Street, next to Mamak)
      Haymarket Chinatown, Sydney
